Indoor Tanning: Spray Tanning vs. Tanning Bed

October 26, 2009 by Alissa Fiset

Everyone loves that bronze color we get during summer vacation, but many of us go to great lengths to keep the golden-glow year-round. As the trend of indoor tanning has risen within the last few years, more experts have been coming out with conflicting opinions of the harms of hitting the tanning salon. Here is a comparison of the two different forms of indoor tanning:

Spray tanning: Spray tanning (also known as Mystic tanning) is the application of a colorless chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) in the form of a mist or a spray. DHA interacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a brown color change. There is no evidence that DHA is toxic and it is not absorbed through the skin. However, you need to follow directions exactly when getting a spray tan: wear the hair net, put on the nail stickers and apply the tan-resistant lotion just as the tan technician tells you! If you don’t follow the rules, you’ll come out looking streaking and splotchy. It takes a few hours for the skin to darken, and the tan usually lasts for about a week.

Tanning bed: Tanning in indoor beds carries many of the same risks as tanning outdoors in natural sunlight. A tanning bed contains a concentrated form of UV rays that could increase the risk of skin cancer. You also run the risk of damaging your eyes if you do not wear the proper eyewear. However, the tan you get in a tanning bed generally lasts longer and looks more natural.

July 22, 2009 by Alexandra Paul

You know you are ready for school to start when…

-All you have done this summer is watch terrible Spanish soap operas.

- The best vacation you took was to Big Surf.

- You made $30 at your last 8 hour shift at the restaurant.

- You are looking forward to buying new school supplies.

- Your couch has a permanent imprint of your butt.

- You have watched 3 full seasons of The Real Housewives in 3 days.

- You are so tan, you are starting to look purple.

- You sleep until 12pm every day.

- Your mom called to say she’s worried about you.

- You take daily naps.

- You already bought your books and started reading ahead.

How to Get Great Legs!

July 16, 2009 by Paige Blatnik

With the temperature rising, hardly anyone is wearing pants anymore!  Girls are showing off their legs in mini skirts and barely-there shorts, while guys are showing a little leg in cargo shorts and swimming trunks!  Legs have always been a point of attraction for both sexes, and what better time to be checking eachother out than during the summer?

It is important however, to be confident when showing off your legs.  Not quite there yet?  Follow these exercises and you will be on your way to sexy legs in no time at all!  Here are some exercises that are a MUST for over-the-top legs.

1.  Lunges:  Stand up straight with weights in each hand.  Step out with one foot and bend at the knee to form a 90 degree angle to the floor.  Push yourself back up to your starting position and repeat with the other leg.  Do 15 reps.

2.  Calve Raises:  Stand facing a wall or chair with feet together.  Lift up onto the balls of your feet (right beneath your toes) and hold.  You can use your hands against the wall or chair for balance.  Drop back down flat on your feet.  You can add weights for a higher difficulty level.  Repeat 20 times.

3.  Swiss Ball Squat:  Begin by standing with your back toward the wall.  Place an exercise ball in between your back and the wall.  Stand up straight and squat until your legs make a 90 degree angle with the wall.  Hold for three seconds and stand back up, using the ball for support.  Repeat 10 times.

4.  Plie Squat:  Stand with your toes pointing outward, a little further than shoulder-length apart.  Hold weights in each hand and squat (kind of like you are about to sit in a chair).  Hold for 10 seconds.  Slowly come back up to your starting position.  Repeat 10 times.

Stuck at Work? How to Squeeze in that Workout!

June 28, 2009 by Paige Blatnik

With the feel of summer fresh in the air, the last thing on all of our minds is going to work.  Unfortunately, broke college students DO need to make money.  So for the majority of us, we are stuck at work…not having fun in the sun.

This can also put a damper on our workout routine.  Who has time to exercise when you are interning during the day and serving tables at night?  That does not leave a lot of free time to stop by the gym.  But don’t lose all hope.  Read on to see how to squeeze in that workout while you are stuck at work!

If you baby-sit or work at a day care…Get in some crunches while laying on the ground with the kids!  Lay flat on your back and pick one of the children up to play “airplane”, then lift up and down keeping your abs tight.  You will have a six pack in no time!

If you serve tables at a restaurant…Lift the trays and plates above your head and bring them back down again.  This will be a great workout for your arms.  This simple move will have you seeing definition in your arms fast!

If you are a sales associate…Keep your calves toned by doing calve raises while standing around the store.  Just lift up onto the balls of your feet and come back down.  Whether you are behind the cash register or folding clothes, you will get sexy legs in no time at all!

If you are stuck at an office desk…pick up that stapler and start curling!  You will build your biceps while getting all the work done at the computer.  There will be absolutely no need to stop by the gym later!

Going to work will be so much better now that we can get in that workout while making money!  And for us college students, there ain’t nothing better than making money and looking good!

How to go on vacation for less

If you’re staying in Arizona for the summer, you can ‘get-away’ for the weekend by staying at a resort in Scottsdale, such as the Four Seasons. Prices start at $120 per night. You can also try visiting one of the local museums. Thursdays are free at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, for example.
Go here for more information: Four Seasons

Wanting to fly somewhere but think it’s too expensive? Think again. Southwest Airlines has ‘Ding’ that you can download on your computer. Every time there are cheap rates, your computer will ‘ding’. Roundtrips can cost as low as $200 to $250. One way ticket can be purchased for less than $100.

The recession has lead to several cruise lines offering discounts of over 50% on trips to Alaska. Celebrity Cruises, for instance, has trips from Seattle for as low as $57 a night throughout July and August.

More Tips:
1. Travel with friends, that way you can divide expenses, such as gas and hotel, amongst yourselves.
2. When traveling, a large chunk of your wallet goes toward drive-ins and dining out. Save money by bringing your own cooler with drinks and snacks.
3. Look for fun that is free. Travel somewhere that offers ‘free’ fun, like the beach or the mountains. You can enjoy the view or go hiking.
4. Keep checking Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia, Kayak, and Farewatcher. The fares change every day and sometimes by the hour.
5. Do your research and plan ahead.

Miracle Hair

I literally haven’t dyed my hair since I think February, and my hair has never been healthier. Part of this is I think due to the fact that I’ve been skipping all the chemicals and letting my hair adjust to its natural color, but more than that, I think I have discovered the miracle hair product-and it’s less than $4!

I am head over heels, or in this case I guess hair over heels, for Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship leave-in split end protector for long hair. Not only does it smell yummy– a perfume-y fruit scent– but it really makes my ends feel so much better!

I massage a few pumps of the lotion into my hair, concentrating on the ends, every morning when my hair is still damp, and I notice a serious difference in my hair’s softness, shininess, and overall look. My hair feels smoother when I wash my hair in the shower, when I brush it throughout the day, and when I get bored in class or a meeting and start inspecting it split ends, I can’t find a single one. Seriously.

I actually stole this tip from my best friend-I used to use it every time I went over to her place. But I got so addicted; I had to get my own bottle!

Since I’ve been trying to grow my hair out, this stuff has been a lifesaver. I have yet to notice that fuzzy look my ends get when I really start to need a haircut, so I know my hair is in good condition!

I’m predicting that this Herbal Essences product will be essential during the summer too, when the sun and pool water wreck havoc on everyone’s hair. Pick up one of the little red bottles at any drugstore or Target– try the heavenly smelling shampoo and conditioner too for an extra boost of protection!

Fashionably yours,

Nora

Frozen Yogurt is the New Black

April 4, 2009 by Janell Pratt

Frozen yogurt shops appear to be popping up at every corner around the Tempe area. From what I have heard, there are two off of Mill Avenue (Bliss and Mojo). Bliss is located at the Brickyard, and Mojo can be found off of Rio Salado Parkway. Though I hear great things about both of these frozen yogurt shops, I have yet to venture to either of them. However, I have recently come across a little piece of heaven titled, Yogurtini, located off of Rural Road in the same complex as the Tempe Improv and Tempe Bicycle. This little hole in the wall does not only offer a nice relaxing place to put your feet up, but it also is open everyday from 11am-11pm. Just in case you are in need of a yogurt fix after spending those long rigorous hours in the library.

Yogurtini offers 10 different flavors and 50 unique toppings to dress and dazzle the yogurt to your specific liking. All the flavors and toppings can be found on their website: http://yogurtini.com. You can even decide how much or how little you want at just .39 cents an ounce. That’s not even the best part, not only is the treat affordable, but it is also good for your body. Complete with live cultures, the yogurt helps to maintain a proper digestive track as well as provide your body with calcium, protein, potassium and a few essential vitamins. What could be better than a delicious treat that’s also good for your body…and just in time for summer!

Even though you are given a variety of frozen yogurt shops to choose from around campus these days, I suggest you stop by Yogurtini. Its modern European style furniture and pastel green color scheme bring a unique touch to the average ice cream parlors we have all become so accustomed to in the valley of the sun. It is a great place to spend with friends or even alone, after all every once in a while we all need a break from the social scene. Eat up!
