Go Red
February 5, 2009 by Mackenzie Perino
February 6 is wear red day and no it’s not to celebrate Valentine’s Day early. The red signifies the fight against Heart Disease, the number one cause of death among women. As a 19-year-old, I am not very concerned about the disease, but no matter our age we should all be aware of it and it’s prevention.
Risk factors include being overweight, physical inactivity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high blood cholesterol. To help prevent the disease, we should increase consumption of omega-3 fatty acids like fatty fish. It’s important to switch to healthier fats without increasing total intake. Fat in out diets should be from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Exercise is also important in it’s prevention. At least 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity should be done every day to keep your heart healthy. Check out GoRedForWomen.Org to learn more.
If Heart Disease doesn’t motivate you to get fit, I hope you’ve decided to run Pat’s Run with me! It’s week one in my training and I began with one of my roommates whom I convinced to run it with me!
We began by running down Palm Walk from the SRC to the bridge, and then walked the rest of the way to A Mountain—I’m easing myself into this whole running thing. We hiked up it, walking backward up the asphalt portion and resting for a bit at the top. It’s a great workout to hit a variety of muscles. It’s always good to switch up your routine, give A Mountain a shot, or try a new class at the SRC.
I recently tried a new one and loved it! I highly recommend Dynamic strength. It’s good for both men and women. I rarely get strength training in, so this hour-long class is a great opportunity for a total body workout. Whether you’re looking to bulk up or tone up, this class is great.
