Top Ten Ridiculous Airline Fees

November 17, 2008 by CollegeAffairMagazine.com

1. Crazy baggage fees

It costs anywhere from $15-$450 to check your bags. US Airways, American Airlines and United all charge $15 now for the first checked bag. Make sure your bags aren’t over the weight limit either- one pound over can cost you an extra $100 on top of everything else. It might sound cheesy, but weigh your bags on a scale before you leave for the airport! It’ll save you the hassle.

2. Bringing your pet along

Can’t part with dear Pookie while on vacation? Well good news is you can bring him along on the plane, for a ridiculous amount of money of course. The average fee for pets each way is $100, while some charge up to $359 each way.

3. Making reservations on the phone

A handful of airlines charge up to $15 just to talk to someone over the phone. Is a five minute phone call really worth $15?

4. Re-banking frequent flyer miles

If you buy a ticket with frequent flyer miles, make sure you’re going to use it. Some airlines charge up to $100 to re-bank the miles if you decide to cancel the ticket.

5. Changing your reservations.

Changing the date or time of your reservation can cost you up to $200.

6. Paper Tickets

Delta charges customers $50 who still want their physical paper tickets. As far as I’m concerned, a five inch piece of paper isn’t worth $50. Make reservations online.

7. Airline food

US Airways charges for just about everything. $2 for soft drinks or a bottle of water, $5 for snacks, and $10 for a meal. Hit up the airport restaurants before or in between flights for some real food.

8. Extra legroom fee

Apparently airlines want to punish those that are abnormally tall or just those who don’t want their knees crammed to their chests for an 8 hour flight. Most airlines have implemented this charge for the seats that give you some extra space. United charges anywhere from $15- $110 for some extra space.

9. Pillow and blanket fees

JetBlue charges $7 for a pillow and a blanket.

10. Headphones

Want to watch the in-flight movie? Or maybe listen to the ridiculously good music provided? Expect to pay up! US Airways charges $5 for headphones. Normal headphones fit into the jacks though, so bring your own.
